Olive Tree Print + Essence
Olive Tree Print + Essence
In March of 2022, while trying to determine why some of his olive trees had not taken root properly in his orchard in the Bureij refugee camp, Salman al-Nabahin and his son unearthed mosaics dating from the fifth to seventh century AD. Bureij is a camp in the middle of the Gaza strip, originally built for Palestinian refugees who were forcefully removed from their towns by Zionist forces when Israel was founded in 1948. In early November, Israel carried out numerous strikes on camps, indiscriminately killing the people who live there.
Palestine is home to the world’s oldest olive trees, some of which are 4,000 years old. Olive trees are resilient, able to withstand drought and unfavorable conditions. Olive is one of the oldest sacred herbs, and its leaves and oil are used to honor, consecrate, and anoint. In Palestine, olive trees are passed down through the generations, and hold major cultural significance. It’s estimated that since 1976 Israel has uprooted at least 800,000 olive trees in the West Bank.
In June of 2022, Vin created an olive essence with natural spring water in a family orchard in the mountains of Petralia Sottana, Sicily, and preserved it in organic grappa. The prints contain a riso printed a photograph of that olive tree in flat gold, green, and black and hand screen printed mosaics from Salman al-Nabahin’s olive orchard with metallic silver ink and three drops of the olive essence.
Print is approximately 10.25 x 15 inches. Essence is approximately 1 ounce. Ships rolled in a mailing tube.
